Mission and History
From its inception in 2004, the mission of the Pellegrini Opera has been to make great operatic music available to all individuals, regardless of their age, income, demographic background, or knowledge of music. Pellegrini Opera was created by internationally acclaimed soprano Maria Pellegrini who is committed to bringing opera to people who would not normally have the opportunity to experience it.
Maria recognized that many people are discouraged from attending operas because of the significant cost. Maria also longed for a way to bring opera into the lives of children and teenagers, in order to expose them to this vibrant art and open their ears to music different from what they were used to listening. She wants to show students how the story lines of the great operas relate to their own lives, conquering the myth that operatic music has nothing to do with the modern world.
Though Maria wants to make the Pellegrini Opera easily accessible to all audiences, she also wants to ensure that the performances maintain the highest professional quality. For each performance she engages several opera singers, a stage director, and a music director/accompanist. Last but not least, Maria wanted to create an arena for emerging Canadian opera singers to practice their performing skills in major operatic roles before a live audience. Singers may also pursue their vocal training with Maria.
Today, the Pellegrini Opera company provides opportunities for many talented local artists to present quality opera to the National Capital residents. Maria envisions the company growth to a full season and an expansion of the outreach programs to more elementary and secondary schools.
It is with great pleasure and pride that the Pellegrini Opera prepares to celebrate its 6th Anniversary Season in 2009/10.
